Thank you to all of those who came out to our last reading featuring Holly Bass and Kyle Dargan. We look forward to your continued support!

Come join us for another evening full of visual art and poetry at the Honfleur Gallery. This time INTERSECTIONS examines "The Poetics of Hip-Hop" through the work of international hip-hop ambassadors Terrance Nicholson (aka Sub -Z) and Carl Walker (aka Kokayi), collectively known (along with band members Jay Nichols and Ezra Greer) as Opus Akoben.

The evening will also include a question and answer session with our featured readers and we will close the evening with an open mic .

Terence Nicholson (aka Sub -Z) is a Native Washingtonian, poet, painter, emcee, producer, sculptor, musician and martial artists. Although Nicholson wears many hats, he sees little or no division between these creative disciplines, in fact he uses his training and preparation in all of these areas to create a multi-layered and rich body of work. He cites a list of musical influences that are as equally wide and diverse as the crafts that he has chosen as his modes of expression. As painter and sculptor, Nicholson graduated from the Corcoran School of Art here in Washington, and he as exhibited nationally and internationally, garnering respect by his peers for his thematic and complex pieces.

To hear some of Nicholson's music or for more biographic notes and info on Nicholson's influences on Terence please visit his Myspace page of his solo project ThayloBleu http://www.myspace.com/thaylobleu.

Carl Walker (aka Kokayi) is a father, a Native Washingtonian, poet, composer, educator, producer, theoretician and multi-genre vocalist. Carl attended University of Maryland at College Park to study Electrical Engineering yet "graduated with honors in hip hop and with a minor in socialization." As a poet/emcee/vocalist Walker mixes and remixes vocal traditions in his improvisational works. As an educator and theoretician, Walker has taught in Cuba, at the California Institute of the Arts, Stanford University, San Francisco State University , New York University and The School of Improvisational Music). He has also led workshops on "freestyling" and the art of vocal improvisation as it relates to continuum of African Diasporic musical traditions.

To hear some of Walkers's music or for more biographic notes and info on Walker's influences on Carl please visit his Myspace page http://www.myspace.com/kokayi.

Opus Akoben is a genre-challenging band of cliff jumping, innovative musicians that are deeply committed to their craft. As a collective Opus Akoben (core members are Terence Nicholson, Carl Walker, Jay Nichols, and Ezra Greer), the group has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East as part of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs's American Music Abroad Program. This group of exceptional musicians has enjoyed tremendous success in Europe, having been signed to BMG France and Label Bleu, they have also traveled and performed throughout Europe as a collective and as individual professionals working with other musicians such as Omar Sosa, Andy Milne, Nils Petter Molvær, Citizen Cope and Steve Coleman. As a group Opus Akoben is preparing for a trip to China later this year.
