that's up for debate spirit.it all depends upon your concept and perspective of the word positive.i think that Malcolm was a unique character for the fact that his morals and understanding of civil liberties were well pronounced.BUT.of course they were translated by a doctrine (Nation of Islam) that was inherently flawed.of course he attempted to remedy the situation and got popped.but again to say that he was 100 positive after he converted would be to apply a broad generalization to the word positive…perhaps his intentions were in a positive sphere…

Homage to Gordon Parks: 1913-2006 by Deborah Willis
Wednesday, June 07, 2006 @ 7:00pm
Gordon Parks was an American Renaissance man who mastered many media—including photography, film, music and writing—to express an uplifting message of hope in the face of adversity. His life and work have inspired generations of young people who have found humanity despite intolerance. Parks died on March 7, 2006 at age 93. In an insightful evening Deborah Willis, professor of photography and imaging at NYU and a lecturer at Harvard University, and Johanna Fiore, Gordon’s 18-year indispensable collaborator, and still photographer on the HBO documentary film, The Life and Works of Gordon Parks, who understands the man and his work better than anyone else, present an incomparable view of this inspirational man. Philip Brookman, Corcoran Senior Curator of Photography and Media Arts, and co-curator with Deborah Willis of Half-Past Autumn: The Art of Gordon Parks, moderates.

malcolm x in the spike lee movie "x" after the first 30 minutes of the film was a completely positive character. if you saw the movie, i don't know why that would need clearing up. LOL. I guess someone could argue that his decision to dis old girl ("what can I do to help?" "nothing") wasn't positive, but hey.

wow, that was an idiotic quote. completely positive characters are boring? i guess jamie fell asleep around 30 minutes into malcolm x then. and his completely positive character in 'collateral' must have bored him to tears. what on earth is he talking about? sometimes i wonder if people are even sober when they give these interviews. and if the interviewers are equally drunk for failing to ask follow up questions of any substance. also, the interviewer saying never degraded himself must have missed a few episodes of 'in living color', missed 'booty call' (or whatever that nonsense was called) and a few other less-than-oscar-worthy moments in jamie's career. sad that these new jack writers have memories that are only five years long.

my source was allhiphop.read the Jamie Foxx interview.he quotes ice cube:
Jamie Foxx: I think what it is, is that Black people in situation where we've endured 500 years of slavery - so we have these negative images of ourselves. If Jim Carrey does anything in any type of role its funny - he doesn't lose anything. But if a Black person plays a particular role, it's like people think it's setting us back. Ice Cube made an excellent statement once. He said, "We need to make money on our own stereotypes and not worry about the opinions of white America." Art imitates life, and in life there are undercover cops, there are Ray Charles'. Completely positive characters are boring, that's not real. Oscars recognize all movies about characters, many of which are flawed. So we just need to recognize that.

about kanye west, he is in the interesting position of probably having no one around him to critically challenge some of the things he says.i'd try an open letter to him, sent to one of the hip-hop periodicals.maybe somehow he'll actually see it? who knows. send said open letter to allhiphop, a lot of industry people check that site out, i'm told.

I was in a debate the other day and it's not just this word.little white kids feel cool saying any thing: from Nigga to Japs, etc. They haven't read the fine print and noted that I reserve the right to punch you in the face should you speak that word to me.

mr mr scarface
that is WILD. i can imagine being in the crowd trying not to look at the happy white faces looking at you thinking "Kanye said I could say it ha!" . wow .
at the same time, I think him, Dave, McGruder, Damon Wayans and others are on some campaign to beat the word to death so there is no more power in it whatsoever. it aint cute to me tho when a whiteboy says "whutup my nigga" and has thrown out conscience to expect anything less than me being ok.all because of pop culture.
