March 3, DC lost one of our most treasured tradition-bearers, Barnett Williams, an elder of the drum circle in Malcolm X Park. We all will truly miss him -- his leadership, his wisdom, his talent, his sharing and teaching.

An evening service/viewing takes place on Friday, March 10 from 6-9 p.m. at McGuire Funeral Home, 7400 Georgia Ave. On Saturday, March 11 drummers/musicians from across the city will play as part of his homecoming beginning at 10 a.m. at Imani Temple, 605 Maryland Ave, NE. He will be buried in Lincoln Cemetary later that day, at 4001 Suitland Rd in Suitland.

ONCE AGAIN... Gotta send PEACE and LOVE to my fam. Afi is about to debut big time. I just wanna give thanks to those allies that have been there through the thick. Now its about to get thin... if anybody has seen the video, you should know this has truly been a blessing and there is a higher cause to this. I'm looking forward to more love and this true feminine power to begin to heal the world... Malkia and Kimani, excellent, fantastic, fabOlous job. Nothing has come easy.

KRS-ONE GOES GANGSTA AT STANFORD?

I don’t know if you all recall this intellectual beef from a few years ago, but it looks like KRS-One and Adisa Banjoko are at it again. Now, I wasn’t there, but at a recent Hip-Hop panel discussion at Stanford University in California things got heated! So, a while back Adisa challenged the notion “I Am Hip-Hop” and that Hip-Hop is actually a sub-culture. KRS-One established the notion of “I am Hip-Hop.” In 2004, Adisa wrote and editorial http://www.allhiphop.com/editorial/?ID=194 and KRS-One responded as well http://www.allhiphop.com/editorial/?ID=195 and its been on ever since. Well, somehow these two men were both at Stanford. I don’t know if Adisa was on the panel, but he was there. In this audio, you will hear a KRS-One that we haven’t heard in a long time. I’m not going to comment too much. You be the judge! Click here to listen! Click here for all of the audio on this incident

background: stanford university was having a panel on hip hop which included krs, davey d, dead prez and some other folk.....now one of the panel was a guy named adisa who posts at davey d's forums and who wrote this essay on krs:

Let me start by saying I “hate” on southern music, hell I “hate” on all music, I hate on bafoonery, and I also support the claim that black actors are more appreciated in stereotypical and negative roles from Haddie McDowell to Morgan Freeman, I researched and made this a speech in college. Howsoever the movie (Hustle ‘n Flow) was very good in my opinion and gave me an appreciation of Southern music– not a like of Southern music– just an understanding. It made me compare it to hip hop as we back East see it and at the time when it was the CNN of the ghetto. The movie made me aware of Southern “culture” and the sound was so applicable it could not be ignored as best song for a movie this year. Not that the song is good at all– it embodies that movie moreso than any song has in years. Straight up Menace (MC EIHT, Menace to Society) was 10 times better a song and it spoke the movie– but it wasn’t as influential as this song. I think the Academy is really appreciating the art, I think this is a boundary broken for urban music and art.

No It's hard out here for a pimp is not the best lyrics out there but you can't deny it was best in that it captured the the movie which was about a pimp who lived in the dirty dirty. Regardless of all this, art imitates life and give credit where credit is due. No i wasn't down for the presentation of it but i'm glad they won and i'm glad they were excited to win. And they could say they won an oscar. And who are we to judge them. We don't know where they've come from, their personal stories, lives and struggles. At the same time, they may of had the best life with no struggles, PHD"s and the greatest knowledge in the world and still have written that song. It doesn't matter. I'm happy they won and so are they. And while we sit here and debate on how its pulling down the race to write or portray pimps in the public, they are creating art and making a living with it. But we hold someone like Aaron McGrudar as a modern day revolutionary who is so controversial and an intellectual. He is doing what they did, pimping their game. At the same time, that's what art is for to challenge, debate, hate and love.
