As featured on the front pages of today's Washington Express and the City Paper's
City Lights Section, the eclectic artistry of W. Ellington Felton will headline
this Friday's show at the Black Cat. DC's Renaissance man, W. Ellington Felton,
is enjoying the critical acclaim received from his new disc, "Postcards
from the Edge," comprised of soulful hip-hop spoken word jams that reflect
wide span of his influences. Expect Dub Ell's set to be in full effect (nuff'
said).
Joining Dub for this 3 star event will be Palmer Park's prophetic producer,
Kev Brown -- whose signature beats and keyboard bass lines have floated the
famed rhymes and vocals of Jill Scott, Jay Z, De La Soul, and Eric Roberson,
to name a few. Kev Brown's new disc, "I Do What I Do,"
is an extension of the risk-taking temper that makes him a hot musician and
now a formidable soothsayin' MC on tracks such as, "Life's A Gamble"
and "Hennessey."
Don't miss opening act RPM (Restoring Poetry in Music) aka Panacea, a live hip-hop electronica unit from the MD/VA area, who won the National Battle of the Bands in 2005 and now is in the middle of a label bidding war.
Enjoy the shine of these three stars!

His Sophmore album, "On the Jungle Floor," contains the hit single "Character," and the mindblowing cuts "Hot Stage Lights" and "Being a Girl." (6/26) SY SMITH LIVE @ THE CHOCOLATE CITY COTTON CLUB!!!
FROM THE DESK OF RAHEEM DEVAUGHN AND W.ELLINGTON FELTON
This Sunday, June 26th We are sad to annouce that Chocolate City Cotton Club will be taking a summer break..............we will be coming back in the Fall
BUT WE ARE HAPPY TO SAY....... This Sunday we will have the one and only Sy Smith performing live with an All Star Band. here is a little info about Sy....
Recently nominated for Best Contemporary Blues/R&B Artist by the LA Weekly Music Awards, Sy Smith is quickly garnering coveted critical acclaim and even more fans with the independent release of her CD "The Syberspace Social". The CD features production from heavy-hitters Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest, Lucy Pearl), James Poyser (Badu, Jill Scott) and Nicolay (Foreign Exchange), but what's really impressive is the production by the artist herself. Standout songs "Runnin'" and "Stand Alone" showcase Sy's skills as not only a vocalist but also an innovative musician. Sy's resumé includes backing up Whitney Houston, Macy Gray and Usher; her songwriting has earned her an Emmy nomination (she's written for a wide array of artists such as r&b singer Mya and jazz guitarist Ronny Jordan); and her TV credits include 5 seasons on the hit show Ally McBeal and backing up the contestants on American Idol. She is also featured on the Crossrhodes record "The Invitation". She blessed them with her angelic voice on " 3 Sides" and "A.S.O.R." However, the real magic of Sy's music occurs when she's doing her own thing. Whether listening to the sexy funk-fusion sounds of "The Syberspace Social" or witnessing her live stage show, there's no denying that Sy Smith is putting a refreshing twist in today's soul music and as Billboard Magazine says about her, "we are all the better for it!"
"The Syberspace Social" available now at www.cdbaby.com, Amoeba Records (Hollywood) and worldwide at www.sysmith.com!

(7/2) The BW Parkway featuring FETILE GROUND and W. ELLINGTON FELTON!!!
Baltimore's Finest meets DC's Native Son, when Fertile Ground and W. Ellington Felton share the stage for the first time, on July 2nd at 9:30 Club. There's more than pavement along the BW Parkway connecting these two artists, who are the leading icons of underground music in each of their respective cities -- they're both have mastered the art of rockin' a show.
Differences do abound though. Fertile Ground recently pulled a Sankofa move, reaching back to go forward, remastering their debut disc, "Field Songs," which had been out of print. For this event, Fertile Ground's set will span their 4 disc catalogue and dust off Field Songs' classics, including "Sentimental Groove," "Stay Strong," and hopefully "Ghetto Butterflies."
While Fertile Ground's Sankofa move takes them to the present, Dub Ell reaches into his current reflections as he continues to road-test his cloaked masterpiece, "Postcards from the Edge". "Postcards" is a lively exchange between Dub Ell and a cast of cameos. His entourage never distracts from his tact for songwriting, as evident in the quandry of forgiveness in "Yesterday," the humour of "Hush," and the brutal honesty of "Post Up."
Differences aside, don't miss this eclectic evening, as the tales of two cities converge along the BW Parkway.

(1/21) JEAN GRAE
The Real Hip-Hop wrecks shop when Jean Grae, Diverse, and S.P.P. (Storm, Priest,
and Poem-Cees) light the mic right, next Friday at the Black Cat. Recently the
feminine intensity of Jean Grae has been glaring from magazines everywhere,
including the cover of Urb and Mugshot, as well as the pages of Vibe, XLR8R
and Blended. And to top it all this daughter of jazz impressario, Abdullah Ibrahim,
is a dope MC whose new disc "Jeanius," produced by 9th Wonder of Little
Brother, reaffirms Jean's reputation as a verbal prodigy comprable to the dope
lyricists and mcs of our generation. Tonight in addition to rocking the spot
with her rhyming partner Diverse, she graciously shares the stage with DC's
own S.P.P.
S.P.P. personifies DC's stars and bars with Storm, Priest, and the Poem-Cees whose almagamated unit will support their hot 12" single that they collaboratively released last month. This vinyl of singles featuring "You Know the Name," by Storm, "I Told You" by Priest, and "For You," by the Poem-Cees, has been shedding light on DC burgeoning hip-hop scene of talent. Whether together or apart these three cats rock one hot show.
